COALITION OF CUBAN-AMERICAN WOMEN PRESIDENT SPEAKS AT THE INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES

Shortly after the arrest of 75
dissidents in March, 2003 in Cuba, members of the Cuban-American Bar Association (CABA) and the Cuban Democratic Directorate (Directorio Democrático Cubano) presented information about the arrests to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States in Washington, DC. A follow-up panel requested by the Commission took place on October 10, 2007. Mrs. Laida Carro (representing Directorio) and Yamile Llanes Labrada, wife of Cuban prisoner of conscience, Dr. Jose Luis Garcia Paneque, traveled to Washington for the audience before the Commission.

During the 45-minute presentation, Mrs. Carro, who serves as president of the Coalition of Cuban-American Women, relayed recent information obtained directly form Cuba on the condition of the many prisoners who are gravely ill and subjected to extremely inhumane prison conditions. Following her report, Ms. Llanes Labrada gave a poignant account on her husband's condition as well as the impact his incarceration has had on her family. (She and her four children now live in Texas.) Finally, the Commissioners viewed a video in which two former political prisoners spoke about their experience in Cuban prisons.
