CUBA: REINA LUISA TAMAYO IS BESIEGED AT HER HOME IN BANES / ORLANDO ZAPATA'S TOMB IS DESCRATED

May 12, 2010

From the city of Banes in the province of Holguín, Reina Luisa Tamayo Danger, the mother of prisoner of conscience, Orlando Zapata Tamayo, who died on February 23, 2010 as the result of an 86-day hunger strike, denounced that Cuban State Security has posted five men dressed in civilian clothes at the door of her home, controlling all those who enter and leave the house.

On Tuesday May 11, Reina Luisa went to the cemetery in Banes and became very upset when she found that an unsuccessful attempt had been made to cover the engraved inscription on her son’s cement tomb with white paint. In addition, the plastic flowers left by her on the tomb had been removed.

In a recorded testimony of these incidents in Banes, Reina Luisa called “criminals” the State Security agents in front of her home:

“Murderers, insolents, go and guard the cemetery…what you should be doing is protecting my son’s tomb. I will not allow anyone touching his tomb…Leave the door of my home free for those who wish to enter. If you are truly confident in the people why are you so fearful of anyone from the opposition movement manifesting their solidarity to this Cuban mother?”

According to Reina, her son’s tomb was desecrated as a form of manipulation by authorities to try to irritate and demoralize her even more. But about this she said:

“… they will not succeed.. We will not give up our peaceful struggle against the regime…”

The Cuban government is responsible for the physical and mental wellbeing of Reina Luisa Tamayo Dánger and her family. We urgently appeal to heads of states, leaders of political, civic, religious and professional organizations, the press, and all men and women of good will worldwide to demand that the Cuban government desists its systematic harassment against Reina Luisa Tamayo Dánger and her family and that the culprits of the desecration of Orlando Zapata Tamayo’s tomb are found and brought to justice.

CUBA
